That is more than 70 percent of the world’s entire tiger population. But across all those reserves and thousands of tigers, only a few have become legends. These are the ones who got names, who had their own stories, who made people travel hundreds of kilometres just for a chance to see them.

This blog covers the most famous tigers and tigresses of India, park by park. The tigers here live around an old fort, ancient ruins, and open lakes, which makes sightings unlike anything you will get in any other park.

Machli — T16, Lady of the Lakes

Machli is the most famous wild tiger India has ever had. The name means fish in Hindi, and she got it because of the fish-shaped marks on her face. Her territory covered the three lakes near Ranthambore Fort, which made her one of the most watched and photographed wild animals on the planet.

She killed a 14-foot crocodile. She defended her ground against much larger male tigers. She raised 11 cubs over her life and lived to 19 years, which is very rare for a wild tigress. The Indian government gave her a commemorative postal stamp in 2013. She passed away in August 2016, but her bloodline runs through most of Ranthambore’s current tigers.

If you visit Ranthambore today and go into zones 1, 2, and 3, you are walking through her old territory.

Krishna — T19, Machli’s Daughter

Krishna is Machli’s daughter and carried her mother’s legacy forward. She held the prime lake zone of Ranthambore for years after Machli. She raised multiple litters and was regularly sighted in zones 3 and 4. Her daughter Arrowhead later pushed her out of the lake territory, which is exactly how it works in the wild. Krishna’s cubs and grandcubs now roam the same forest.

Arrowhead — T84

Arrowhead is one of the most sighted tigresses in Ranthambore right now. She took over the famous lake territory from her mother Krishna and has held it firmly. She is spotted in zones 1, 2, and 6. If you are visiting Ranthambore for a safari today, Arrowhead is the name your guide will most likely mention.

Ustad — T24

Ustad was one of the most dominant male tigers Ranthambore had seen. He ruled zones 1, 2, and 6 for years and was almost unchallenged during his prime. He became controversial after being linked to attacks on humans, including the death of a forest guard in 2015, and was relocated to a zoo in Udaipur. His story is still debated among wildlife lovers; some say he was a true man-eater, others say human interference pushed him to it.

Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Kanha Forest is one of the best-managed tiger reserves in India and the largest national park in central India. It is where the Barasingha was saved from extinction, and it is also home to some of the most famous individual tigers the country has seen.

Munna (T-17) — The CAT Tiger

Munna is one of the most recognisable tigers India has ever produced. The stripes on his forehead form the letters C, A, T not a joke, not a filter, that is just how his markings are. He was named after a local guide who had a slight limp, because Munna also developed one after a territorial fight.

He was the dominant male of the Kanha zone for many years and was one of the most sighted tigers in the entire park. In 2019, due to his age and increasing territory disputes, he was shifted to Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal. He lived out his final years there. His son Chota Munna now holds territory in the Kanha zone and is regularly spotted on safaris.

Junior Bajrang (Also Known as T-118)

Junior Bajrang is the name to know if you are visiting Kanha today. He was born and brought up in the Kanha zone and now rules it as the dominant male. He has sired cubs with multiple tigresses in the area and is one of the most frequently sighted tigers in the park right now. Morning safaris through the Kanha zone give you the best chance of spotting him.

Neelam (T-65) and Naina (T-76)

These two tigresses share territory in the Kanha zone and are both regularly sighted. Naina is known for being one of the more beautiful tigresses in the park. She avoids conflict with neighbouring tigers and keeps to her patch. Neelam is slightly more dominant in the shared area. Both have raised cubs successfully.

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Pench National Park is the forest that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. It is quieter than Kanha and Bandhavgarh, but the tiger stories here run just as deep.

Collarwali — T15, Mataram

Collarwali is the most famous tigress Pench has ever had. She was given a radio collar in 2008, making her the first tagged tigress in Pench, and the name stuck. She also starred as a cub in the BBC documentary Spy in the Jungle.

What made her a legend was what she achieved as a mother. She gave birth to 29 cubs across 8 litters in her lifetime, a world record for any wild tigress. She raised all of them well. Her cubs spread across Pench and beyond, with some sent to other reserves to help struggling populations. The whole park owes a large part of its current tiger numbers to her.

She passed away on 15 January 2022 at age 16. The people of Pench mourned her like a family member. She was cremated with full respect, and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh called her Super Tiger Mom.

Langdi Baghin — PN20

Langdi Baghin was Collarwali’s sibling and one of the oldest tigresses in Pench. She passed away in March 2026 at approximately 18 years of age, making her one of the longest-living wild tigresses in recent memory. She spent her entire life in Pench and raised many cubs of her own, contributing quietly but significantly to the park’s tiger population.

Patdev (Also Known as T-4)

Patdev is Collarwali’s daughter and has taken on her mother’s role as one of Pench’s most fertile tigresses. She has given birth to 16 cubs so far and is still active. If Collarwali built the foundation, Patdev is the one continuing it. She is regularly sighted and is one of the main draws for visitors to Pench today.

L-Mark Male (Also Known as T74)

L-Mark is one of the current dominant males of Pench. Born in 2016, he took over territory from his father the Rayakassa male and now controls a large stretch that includes Junewani waterhole, Bijamatta waterhole, and the Pyorthadi rocks area. He is named after a distinct L-shaped mark on his body.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

Tadoba tiger reserve is the closest major to Nagpur and one of the most visited parks in Maharashtra. It has produced some of India’s most photographed tigers.

Maya — T12, Queen of Tadoba

Maya is the tiger that put Tadoba on the map. She was known for her boldness, her territorial clashes with other tigresses, and the way she walked out into the open without any hesitation. Photographers loved her. She brought massive attention to Tadoba and is credited with turning it into one of India’s most popular wildlife destinations.

She has since passed away due to natural causes. But the Moharli zone and the area around Tadoba Lake, which was her core territory, still has active tiger sightings. The current tigresses there are connected to her legacy.

Wagdoh — The Giant of Tadoba

While Maya ruled as the tigress, Wagdoh ruled as the dominant male. He was known as Asia’s biggest tiger and controlled the Moharli range for years. He was massive, calm in a threatening way, and completely in charge of his ground. Wildlife photographers who saw him during his prime say he was one of the most physically imposing tigers they have encountered anywhere.

His territory around the Telia Lake area is still some of the best tiger country in Tadoba.

Sonam — T24 of Tadoba

Sonam is one of the Four Sisters of Telia, a group of tigresses who dominated a stretch of Tadoba’s Telia area. She was the dominant one among the four and regularly sighted near the Telia waterhole. The Four Sisters were one of the biggest wildlife stories out of Tadoba for years, drawing photographers and wildlife lovers specifically to get sightings of all four together.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh has the highest tiger density in India. The grass is short in many areas, the tigers walk roads openly, and the park practically guarantees sightings. It also has a tiger dynasty that is unlike anything else in Indian wildlife history.

Charger and Sita — The Original Dynasty

Everything in Bandhavgarh today traces back to two tigers, Charger and Sita. Charger was a dominant male known for charging at safari vehicles, which is exactly how he got his name. Sita was one of the most photographed tigresses in the world and appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine. Together, they started a lineage that now makes up almost the entire tiger population of Bandhavgarh.

B2 — Son of Charger

B2 is considered the tiger that made Bandhavgarh famous for tourism. He was Charger and Sita’s son and became the dominant male after fighting his own father for the territory. He was known for charging at vehicles, for attacking rivals with intensity, and for being completely fearless. Wildlife photographers made special trips just to photograph him. He held the Tala zone for years and passed away in 2011. When B2 was alive, Bandhavgarh was full. When he died, many regulars felt a real gap.

Bamera — Son of B2

Bamera was the largest tiger Bandhavgarh had seen in years. He was B2’s son and took over the park as the dominant male after B2. He was known for being powerful but relatively calm — he defended his ground but did not look for unnecessary fights. He held the Tala zone until his death and was one of the most commonly spotted tigers in the park for years.

Kankati — Also Known as Vijaya

Kankati is named for her notched ear. She dominated the Chorbehra and Chakradhara regions of Bandhavgarh. Her territorial fights with other tigresses were intense guides and naturalists who were there still talk about how she handled rivals. She was one of the most watched tigresses in Bandhavgarh for a long time.

Dotty and Spotty

Dotty is named for a D-shaped mark on her forehead. She holds territory in the Magdhi zone of Bandhavgarh and has been seen regularly with cubs. Her sister Spotty shares nearby ground. Both are currently active and give visitors in Magdhi zone some of the most reliable sightings in the park.

FAQs

Q1.
